A Slice of the North
Wendy Stanwick spent 30 years working with clay and wood before discovering stone. She moved to Northern Ontario from Calgary in 2002 and soon became fascinated by the area rocks. Her father had been cutting cores for checkers for his friends when Wendy found a beautiful green core on his bookcase and asked if thin slices could be done. A Slice of the North was born.
Each slice is a unique piece of handcrafted jewellery from genuine diamond drilled core samples. Mining companies and prospectors extract the rock from the Canadian Shield in their search for minerals. The sample is then sliced thin on a diamond saw. From this circle all other shapes are cut. Slices may be embellished with pearls, crystals or drawings.
Wendy works out of her studio in her hometown, Matachewan, ON.
